About us

Green Schools:
Clonmacnois N.S. have 3 green flags and we are trying on to get our 4th this year. We were presented with our 1st green flag for a recycling project, our second for a project on saving electricity, our third for a project on saving water and our fourth is for trying to make all our homes into Green Homes. We actually found out that a dripping tap can waste thousands of litres of water. In our school we keep on recycling by composting, recycling, resusing cartons etc.
Each classroom must give a presentation on their part of the particular project each year. When the committee give the class a job they must carry out experiments with water, rubbish or electricity, write up reports, make presentations to other classes and discuss details of their project with a visiting supervisor. Mrs. Sherry, the Junior and Senior infant teacher is the chairperson of our committee. The committee also consist of students from 5th & 6th and we are waiting to elect two new members from 3rd & 4th class.

Poem:
Aoife Corbett wrote this poem to show what pollution is doing to our world. She is now a publised author!!. She has been published by Athlone Education Centre in a book of poetry.

Let's start a revolution
To stamp out all pollution.
We'll banish as much plastic
Hey that would be fantastic!
Lets cut down fuel and petrol
'Cos they are detrimental.
We'll start a population
Of forestry plantation.
If we do all this together
It might improve the weather.

Green School News:

  • Green Home is a new enviornmental programme designed for families to take part in. Up to now Green Schools was mostly based in the classroom. With this new iniative not only will Green schools continue to be active in the classrooms but parents will be taking an active part in Green Schools as part of an outreach programme.
  • Householders in the school were encouraged to undertake the Green Home Survey. This survey could have been accessed in two ways: Online at www.greenhome or by filling in The Green Home Householders Handbook.

  • Families have been involved in "Slim your Bin" Project. This was a six week co-ordinated programme where children and their families examined their waste management and with the help of the booklets tried to change their recycling policies. They were also given tips on how not to waste food. All families took part in the Slim your Bin Project have recieved a certificate for their endeavours. Hopefully we have made people more aware of what goes into their bins.

  • Families submitted recipes for using up left over food and we have put together a recipe book

containing many recipes for using up left over foods. Delicious!!!

  • Most families took part in the Green Home Survey and An Taisce collated the results. These families will repeat the survey at the end of the year and we hope that any differences in the results will be environmentally positive.
